EU green manufacturing standards upgraded, electric-driven height adjustable desks to account for 68% of the market
The European Commission's recently released "Green Office Equipment Action Plan" proposes that the electrification rate of office furniture must increase to 68% by 2030, doubling from the current 34%. This policy, coupled with the implementation of the Erp energy efficiency directive, is driving the height adjustable desk industry towards a dual transformation of "electrification and environmental friendliness," with green technology becoming a key competitive advantage.
Electric drive systems are becoming a key upgrade focus. Traditional manual height adjustable desks are gradually being phased out due to their inconvenient adjustment and high carbon emissions. The share of electric models in the EU market has increased from 58% in 2023 to 72% in 2025. To meet these standards, companies are increasing their technological investment. Humanscale's dual-motor drive system reduces energy consumption by 35% and keeps the failure rate below 0.2%. Loctek's integrated design of the motor and lift mechanism achieves an 85% recyclability rate, far exceeding the EU's minimum requirement of 60%.
The use of environmentally friendly materials is accelerating. New EU regulations require that the main materials of height-adjustable tables contain at least 30% recycled content starting in 2027, driving changes in the industry's supply chain. IKEA's latest height-adjustable table features 100% recycled aluminum legs and a recycled plastic console, reducing the product's carbon footprint by 40% compared to traditional models. Sales in the Nordic market have increased by 53% since its launch. "Environmental certification has become a key factor in entering the European market, and products with EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) certification command a 15%-20% price premium," said an Intertek environmental certification expert.
Carbon neutrality is driving industry transformation. Leading companies have announced emission reduction roadmaps. Thermo Fisher Scientific plans to achieve carbon neutrality throughout its entire height-adjustable table production process by 2028. It has already installed a photovoltaic power system at its Hungarian factory, achieving a 62% renewable energy utilization rate. Industry data shows that sales of green-certified height-adjustable tables in the EU market grew by 67% in the first half of 2025. Environmental upgrades are expected to drive a 22% increase in average product prices over the next five years.
